What these jobs involve
Replacing an upper-floor window means removing the old frame, fitting the new one, sealing and finishing – often with heavy, awkward units that need two people to handle. Fascias, soffits and gutters run along the eaves of the whole house, so the work moves along the wall as it progresses.
Both jobs are at height and involve handling materials, which is why good access matters.
Scaffold, tower or something else?
For a single small window, many fitters use their own suitable access equipment. For several upper-floor windows, large units, or a full run of fascias and gutters, a scaffold is often the safer and more efficient option, because it gives a continuous platform along the house and room to handle frames.
A mobile scaffold tower can work for short runs of guttering or a couple of windows on firm, level ground. The installer will usually tell you what access they plan to use – ask them to explain why.

Combine jobs to save money
If you need new windows and a new roofline, or roof repairs as well, it usually makes sense to do them together under one scaffold hire. The cost of erecting and dismantling is a big part of any scaffolding price, so sharing it across several jobs is good value.
- Windows and fascias, soffits and gutters
- Roofline replacement and roof repairs
- Render repairs or repainting at the same time
- Cleaning or repairing chimneys while access is up
Lift heights and practical details
Window fitters often want a platform just below the window sill height of upper floors, while roofline installers need access at the eaves. A scaffold with two lifts can suit both. Boards may need to be positioned to leave room to swing frames into openings.
Ask who will move boards if needed – it should always be the scaffolding company, not the fitters.
