Give every company the same information
Quotes can only be compared if they're for the same job. Send each company the same description, the same photos and the same timescale, and mention any extras you know you'll need – edge protection for roof work, a chimney scaffold, sheeting for render. If one company suggests something the others haven't, ask the others about it too.
Line up what each quote includes
Put the quotes side by side and check each of these points:
| Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Elevations and height | A cheaper quote may cover less of the building or fewer lifts |
| Included hire period | Two weeks and six weeks included make a big difference |
| Weekly rate afterwards | Overruns are common, especially with weather |
| Edge protection and extras | Chimney scaffolds, loading bays, alarms, sheeting |
| Licences and parking | Included, or added as a separate charge? |
| Adaptations | Return visits to raise or change the scaffold |
| Inspection and handover | How the scaffold is checked and confirmed ready |
Points to compare between scaffolding quotes
Work out the realistic total
Using your tradesperson's realistic timescale, calculate what each quote would cost in total – including any weekly charges beyond the included period and any extras you'll need. A quote with a low headline price but a short included period and a high weekly rate can end up costing more.

Warning signs
- A quote that's much lower than the rest with no clear explanation
- No mention of insurance, inspections or handover
- Reluctance to put the details in writing
- Pressure to decide immediately or pay everything upfront
- No clear answer on licences when the scaffold will be on the pavement
Making the decision
Once quotes are comparable, think about availability, communication and confidence as well as price. A company that answers questions clearly, explains its plan for the scaffold and can start when your tradespeople need it is often worth a slightly higher price. You're under no obligation to accept any quote.
