About the company

  • Do you have public liability insurance, and can I see the certificate?
  • What training and qualifications do your scaffolders hold? (In the UK, many carry CISRS cards.)
  • Have you done similar jobs recently – same type of house, same kind of work?
  • Who will be my point of contact during the hire?

About the scaffold

  • Which elevations will be scaffolded, how high, and how many boarded lifts?
  • Will there be edge protection at the eaves if the work is on the roof?
  • Do I need a chimney scaffold, loading bay or temporary roof for this job?
  • Will the scaffold follow standard design guidance, or does it need a specific design?
  • Where will the ties go, and how will they be made good afterwards?

About safety and inspections

  • Will you inspect the scaffold before handing it over, and give confirmation it's ready to use?
  • How often will it be inspected during the hire, and after strong winds?
  • Who should I contact if something looks wrong or the scaffold is damaged?
  • How will the scaffold be secured against unauthorised access out of hours?

  • Will any part of the scaffold stand on or overhang a neighbour's property?

About price and timings

  • What hire period is included, and what is the weekly rate after that?
  • How are adaptations and return visits charged?
  • When can you erect the scaffold, and how much notice do you need to take it down?
  • How would any damage to my property be dealt with?
  • What are your payment terms?

Common questions

What insurance should a scaffolding company have?

Public liability insurance is the key one for homeowners, and companies with employees should have employers' liability insurance. Ask to see certificates and check they're current.

What is a CISRS card?

CISRS – the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme – is the main UK scheme recording scaffolders' training and experience. Asking about your scaffolders' cards is a reasonable check.

Should I get the scaffolding company's answers in writing?

Yes. A written quote that sets out the scaffold, the hire period, extras and terms makes comparison easier and avoids misunderstandings.
